The Trippy History of Magic Mushrooms
Ohio State Research Explainer

The Challenge
Researchers at Ohio State were studying the role mushrooms play in environmental and biological systems. While the research itself was fascinating, the concepts were complex and difficult to communicate to a general audience. The challenge was to translate dense scientific ideas into a story that felt approachable, engaging, and visually clear without oversimplifying the work.

The Insight
The most compelling part of the research was not the data itself, but the role mushrooms play as quiet connectors within larger systems. They are everywhere, often unseen, yet essential. That idea became the foundation for the visual approach.
Rather than trying to illustrate every scientific detail, the goal was to focus on clarity and curiosity. If the audience could understand why mushrooms matter, the science would follow.

The Creative Approach
This project was a close collaboration with a content writer who developed the narrative and voiceover. My role was to translate that narrative into a visual language that made the concepts feel intuitive and engaging.
I led visual development from the beginning, creating the storyboard and animatic to define pacing, structure, and visual metaphors. Working directly from the script, I developed an illustrative motion system that simplified complex ideas through playful, accessible visuals.
The animation style was intentionally light and expressive. Motion, timing, and transitions were used to guide understanding rather than overwhelm the viewer. The result was a visual layer that supported the writing while adding clarity and energy to the story.

The Result
The final piece successfully transformed complex research into a story that felt clear, friendly, and memorable. By pairing strong writing with intentional visual storytelling, the video made scientific research accessible to a broad audience without losing its meaning or integrity.

What This Project Demonstrates
This project reflects how I approach creative leadership in collaborative environments. I respect and elevate strong writing, then translate ideas into visuals that clarify meaning and guide the audience. It shows my ability to lead pre-production, shape visual direction, and turn complex subject matter into engaging communication.
